Several leading contracting firms submitted bids to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) for a major expansion of the Upper Zakum oilfield, the largest offshore oilfield in the United Arab Emirates and the world’s second-largest. Companies including Petrofac International Ltd, Target Engineering Construction Company, and Archirodon Construction have provided technical offers for the significant EPC-2 work package. This expansion is part of Adnoc’s broader P5 program, which aims to increase its oil production capacity from 4.85 million barrels per day (bpd) to 5 million bpd by 2027.
The project is centered on de-bottlenecking existing gas handling facilities and expanding gas lift capabilities to achieve higher oil production targets. New facilities, including a gas lift compressor, gas dehydration unit, vapor recovery system, air dryer package, nitrogen generation package, and other associated infrastructure, will be installed at Assefiya Island within the Upper Zakum field. This development is crucial for enhancing and sustaining the field’s output to 1.2 million bpd within the next two to three years.
Situated in the Arabian Gulf, 84 kilometers northwest of Abu Dhabi, the Upper Zakum offshore field covers an area of approximately 1,200 square kilometers. The current tender for this expansion project, with an estimated value of USD 1 billion, is ongoing, with the bid evaluation process being expedited by Adnoc. The project is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2028 and represents a significant escalation in Adnoc’s long-term strategy to boost production at Upper Zakum.
