India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) emerged as the leading contender for two significant engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) packages, collectively referred to as COMP 4. Valued between USD 4 billion and USD 5 billion, these contracts are nearing the final award stage, though an official confirmation from the Qatari operator is still pending.
L&T has reportedly outperformed other major competitors, including a consortium comprising Italy’s Saipem and China’s Offshore Oil Engineering Company (COOEC), as well as a partnership between McDermott International and South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The COMP 4 packages are part of a tender process initiated in 2023 by the state-owned operator to support the long-term sustainability of gas production at the North Field.
QatarEnergy LNG, a subsidiary of QatarEnergy, is responsible for executing multiple expansion and maintenance projects for the North Field on behalf of its parent company. The COMP 4 project entails the installation of two large offshore compression systems, each featuring a compression platform, flare platform, interconnected bridge, living quarters, and related infrastructure. The compression platforms are expected to weigh between 25,000 and 35,000 tonnes each, with total structural fabrication requirements reaching approximately 100,000 tonnes.
The COMP 4 scope is expected to be divided into two sub-packages—A and B—both of which are likely to be awarded to L&T. Additionally, QatarEnergy LNG is expected to continue developing multiple offshore compression platforms in a phased manner, with the work set to be carried out over several years.
