The Jubail to Buraydah Independent Water Transmission Pipeline (IWTP) reached a key milestone with the recent appointment of Mutlaq Al-Ghowari Contracting Co. Ltd. as the EPC contractor, marking significant progress in its development. Designed to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s water infrastructure, this initiative aligns with the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture’s long-term regional connectivity strategy. The development follows a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) model, ensuring sustainable operations under a Water Transmission Agreement (WTA) set to last up to 35 years.
Spanning approximately 587 km, the pipeline will have a transmission capacity of 650,000 cubic meters per day, supporting the growing water demand in Al-Qassim and the Eastern provinces. To enhance efficiency, six strategic storage tanks will be constructed in Al-Shamasiyah and three in Al-Jubail, providing a total storage capacity of 1,634,500 cubic meters. A key technical feature is its reverse flow capability, allowing water to be redirected from Al-Shamasiyah through Al-Qulayib to Al-Jubail, ensuring uninterrupted supply and optimized distribution.
Beyond expanding water transmission, the initiative prioritizes operational efficiency and cost reduction. By integrating advanced infrastructure, it minimizes electricity consumption, cutting long-term operating expenses. Additionally, it supports national economic growth by increasing local content and promoting Saudization in both business and workforce development.
The Jubail to Buraydah IWTP plays a vital role in ensuring a sustainable water supply while reducing environmental impact. By optimizing energy use, it lowers the carbon footprint associated with water transmission. The large-scale storage system enhances resilience against supply disruptions, contributing to water security across the region. Through its strategic planning and resource management, this development supports Saudi Arabia’s vision for a greener and more self-sufficient future.
