The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced plans to establish new steam power plants, attracting significant interest from both local and foreign companies. According to a statement from the ministry, Minister Ziyad Ali Fadel confirmed that three investment models have been presented to potential investors, with over 100 companies expressing interest in participating in the project.
The planned power plants will be strategically distributed across various regions. In the southern region, the projects include the Al-Amara Thermal Plant (1,400 MW), Al-Faw Thermal Plant (1,950 MW), Al-Nasiriyah Thermal Plant Expansion (1,260 MW), and Al-Hartha Thermal Plant Expansion (1,400 MW). The Central Euphrates region will see the development of the Najaf Thermal Plant (1,400 MW), Al-Shanafiya Thermal Plant (700 MW), and Al-Musayyib Thermal Plant Expansion (700 MW). In the central region, projects include the Al-Yusufyiah Thermal Plant Project (1,820 MW) and the Al-Anbar Steam Power Plant (1,400 MW). Meanwhile, the northern region will feature expansions and new facilities, including the Al-Shemal Thermal Plant Expansion (700 MW), Al-Kasik Thermal Plant (1,400 MW), and Samarra Thermal Plant Expansion (1,330 MW).
These initiatives are part of a comprehensive strategy to diversify Iraq’s energy sources and reduce the risk of widespread blackouts. The country is grappling with significant energy challenges, especially after losing its exemption from U.S. sanctions on Iranian gas and electricity imports. This development jeopardizes nearly 40% of Iraq’s power supply, highlighting the critical need to expand domestic energy infrastructure.
