Independent Power Producer, SolarAfrica Energy, officially commenced construction on its first utility-scale Sun Central Solar Farm – Phase 1 in the Northern Cape. With an impressive total generation capacity of around 342 MW in Phase 1, this development marks the beginning of a significant renewable energy initiative. Over time, Phases 2 and 3 will expand the total capacity to 1 GW, making it one of the largest undertakings of its kind in South Africa.
This ambitious initiative is driven by strong partnerships. SolarAfrica’s CEO, David McDonald, highlighted the critical role of collaborations with Eskom, the Emthanjeni Municipality, and Soventix South Africa, among others. Eskom’s innovative approaches to wheeling and the municipality’s support underscore the project’s foundation. Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) firms Proconics and Sinohydro are also pivotal, handling the installation of the Main Transmission Substation and over 500,000 solar panels, respectively.
Infrastructure investments total just under 277 million USD (R5 billion), with the Main Transmission Substation funded by SolarAfrica at around 57 million USD( R1 billion). This crucial infrastructure ensures efficient power evacuation into the national grid. Additionally, the solar installation represents 222 million USD (
R4 billion) investment, significantly enhancing South Africa’s power infrastructure. As part of the greater Starsight Energy Group, this initiative also sets a blueprint for similar projects in East and West Africa, particularly in Kenya and Nigeria.
SunCentral’s initiative not only alleviates the generation burden on Eskom but also promotes environmental sustainability. By providing 100% green energy at up to 50% cheaper tariffs than traditional utility power, it supports South African businesses in reducing their carbon footprint and electricity costs. This renewable energy effort contributes to the country’s sustainable development goals and showcases the potential of private and public sector partnerships in addressing energy challenges.
