The National Investment Commission is thrilled to unveil an international investment opportunity for the design, construction, operation, maintenance, financing, and ownership transfer (DBOMFT) of two transformative metro projects in Iraq. These projects, delineated in the investment portfolio, aim to meet the pressing need for efficient and sustainable mass transit systems in key cities.
First Project: Najaf-Karbala Metro
The Najaf-Karbala Metro project offers a pivotal transportation solution for pilgrims and travelers visiting the sacred cities of Najaf and Karbala. Spanning 90 kilometers, the proposed metro route will connect Najaf International Airport to Karbala Airport International and traverse the city centers of both provinces. With four main stations along the route, the project endeavors to provide a secure, swift, and eco-conscious mode of transportation.
Interested investment entities are required to submit comprehensive economic feasibility studies, project particulars, financing schemes, and project completion timelines. Moreover, investors must consider previous transportation studies and assume responsibility for any costs associated with obstacles, service transfers, or potential interference with public or private assets along the route.
Second Project: Baghdad Metro
The Baghdad Metro project aims to address the burgeoning demand for mass transit in the capital city. Encompassing seven tracks spanning a total of 150 kilometers and featuring 64 metro stations, this project offers a contemporary and efficient transit system for residents and visitors alike. Operating autonomously, the metro will traverse routes above, below, and on the ground.
Similar to the Najaf-Karbala Metro project, investment prerequisites include detailed feasibility studies, financing arrangements, and evidence of previous successful ventures. Investors must also address potential challenges such as service interruptions and property interference during implementation.
Both projects underscore environmental sustainability, relying on electric energy for operation. The metro systems will feature state-of-the-art trains equipped with specialized cabins to accommodate diverse passenger needs, including gold-class, women and children, and tourist cabins, with provisions for the elderly and individuals with special requirements.
Key Dates and Submission Guidelines:
Investors must purchase the investment portfolio by February 12, 2024, with investment bids due by April 11, 2024. All submissions must include feasibility studies in both Arabic and English and will undergo evaluation by government-appointed consultants specializing in train systems. The qualification process will prioritize companies with extensive experience in train transportation projects.
In summary, these metro projects represent significant investments in Iraq’s infrastructure, promising enhanced mobility, economic growth, and environmental sustainability for years to come. Investors are encouraged to seize this international investment opportunity to contribute to the nation’s development and prosperity.
