ADNOC Awards Multi-Billion Dollar EPC Contract for Export Terminal

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) reached a significant milestone with its final investment decision (FID) and the awarding of a USD 5.5 billion engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the Ruwais LNG liquefaction terminal. This terminal, set to be completed by 2028, marks Adnoc’s ambitious venture into LNG export from the Middle East and Africa region. The EPC contract has been entrusted to a consortium led by Technip Energies, JGC Corporation, and NMDC Energy.

Located in Al Ruwais Industrial City, Abu Dhabi, the Ruwais LNG plant will have a total capacity of 9.6 million tonnes per annum. It will feature two large electric-powered trains, each capable of producing 4.8 million tonnes annually. Notably, the plant aims to set new standards in eco-friendly operations by utilizing renewable and nuclear grid power to fuel its operations. This initiative is bolstered by cutting-edge technology from Baker Hughes for its electric motors and compressors.

Adnoc’s strategic decision to opt for Ruwais over Fujairah for the LNG export terminal underscores operational efficiency gains due to proximity to existing infrastructure like gas fields and petrochemical plants. This move also eliminates the need for extensive pipeline construction, thereby reducing costs significantly.

The Ruwais LNG liquefaction terminal positions Adnoc as a key player in the global LNG market, driven by innovation and sustainable energy practices. It aligns with Adnoc’s broader strategy to enhance LNG production to meet rising global demand, particularly in European markets.
