Aramco, the global leader in integrated energy and chemicals, announced the allocation of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts totaling USD 7.7 billion for a significant expansion of its Fadhili Gas Plant located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The EPC contracts for the Fadhili Gas Plant expansion project are granted to SAMSUNG Engineering Company, GS Engineering & Construction Corporation, and Nesma & Partners.
The project is segmented into three distinct phases. The first phase entails constructing three gas processing trains, each with a capacity of 500 million cubic feet per day. The second phase focuses on installing sulfur recovery units, while the third phase is dedicated to utility enhancements.
Commissioned in 2019, the Fadhili gas plant initially processed natural gas from non-associated fields in the eastern region, bolstering Saudi Arabia’s essential infrastructure. Currently boasting a processing capacity of 2.5 billion cubic feet per day across five trains, the project aims to potentially increase this capacity to 4 billion standard cubic feet per day (BSCFD). Such a significant increase of 1.5 BSCFD is crucial in aligning with Aramco’s ambitious goal of elevating gas production by over 60% by 2030, compared to 2021 levels. Moreover, the expansion is expected to augment sulfur production by an additional 2,300 metric tons per day.
The Fadhili gas program reflects Aramco’s commitment to enhancing the supply of cleaner-burning natural gas, thereby mitigating emissions and facilitating the extraction of more crude oil for value-added refining and export purposes. This expansion project stands as a pivotal element in Aramco’s long-term strategy, geared towards bolstering its capacity to produce gas for domestic consumption, thereby freeing up additional oil for export.
