In a pioneering move, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, unveiled plans to construct unique high-altitude stadiums for the Kalba Club and Khorfakkan Club in the United Arab Emirates. These innovative sports facilities will be built atop mountain peaks, offering cooler temperatures and lower humidity levels for enhanced athletic performance.
The Kalba Club’s new stadium will be situated at an impressive elevation of 850 feet (259 meters) above sea level, while the Khorfakkan Club’s stadium will reside at 900 feet (274 meters). By leveraging the region’s natural topography, these stadiums aim to provide optimal playing conditions for athletes, mitigating the challenges posed by the region’s often-sweltering climate.
During a phone call on Sharjah Radio and TV’s ‘Direct Line’ program, Sheikh Sultan emphasized the importance of club insignia in representing the unique identities of their respective towns. He congratulated the Sharjah clubs that managed to endure in the ADNOC Pro League and assured them of rewards for their remarkable performance.
This initiative by Sharjah aligns with a broader regional trend of revamping sports infrastructure. Saudi Arabia has set the precedent with its ambitious plans to construct the Prince Mohammad Bin Salman Stadium atop the Al Tuwaiq mountain in Qiddiya Entertainment City in Riyadh. Qatar’s successful hosting of the FIFA 2022 World Cup and Saudi Arabia’s upcoming role as the host for the 2034 edition have catalyzed a region-wide transformation. Kuwait also recently announced the revamp of 3 stadiums to meet international standards.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations are proactively diversifying their economies and enhancing their global appeal by positioning themselves as premier destinations for world-class sporting events. These innovative high-altitude stadiums not only showcase the region’s commitment to athletic excellence but also highlight its ability to overcome environmental challenges through creative and sustainable solutions, setting a new benchmark for sports infrastructure worldwide.
