SEPCO III, also known as Shandong Electric Power Construction No.3, entered into an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) agreement with ACWA Power for the first phase of the Hassyan seawater desalination plant.
The inaugural phase of the Hassyan Independent Water Producer (IWP) project will boast a capacity of 180 million imperial gallon per day (MIGD). The plant will occupy a designated land area of 252,300 square meters. This marks DEWA’s initial venture into the Independent Water Producer (IWP) model. Upon completion of this phase, the desalination capacity will surge to 670 MIGD by 2026.
This initiative is a testament to the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to fortify Dubai’s water resources through sustainable means. It stands as a resolute stride towards achieving the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, aiming to derive 100% of Dubai’s total power capacity from clean energy sources by 2050.
This endeavor is integral to DEWA’s mission to elevate its water desalination capacity from the current 490 MIGD to an impressive 730 MIGD by 2030. It seamlessly aligns with Dubai’s unparalleled economic growth and the flourishing construction sector in the Emirate. It serves as a pivotal component of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and is a vital response to the burgeoning population and the rising demand for water across residential, commercial, and other consumer sectors.
