The Maydan Mahzam Oilfield Expansion, spearheaded by state-owned QatarEnergy, aims to revitalize one of Qatar’s oldest offshore oilfields. Located approximately 100 kilometers east of the Qatari coastline near Halul Island, the Maydan Mahzam field has been producing oil and associated gas for over five decades. However, as production rates decline and existing infrastructure surpasses its design life, the expansion seeks to optimize remaining reserves through multiple engineering, procurement, installation, and construction (EPIC) packages.
Package 1 of the expansion, focusing on multiple offshore structures, has entered the tendering phase, with contractors currently preparing technical proposals. Potential bidders include Saipem Spa, McDermott International, China Offshore Oil Engineering Company (COOEC), Larsen & Toubro Ltd, and H.D Hyundai Heavy Industries. Following a two-stage bidding process, the contract is expected to be awarded before the end of the year.
Package 2, dedicated to subsea pipelines, umbilicals, and power cables, is also in the tendering phase, with a similar timeline for contract awarding. The potential bidders for this package include Saipem Spa, McDermott International, China Offshore Oil Engineering Company (COOEC), Subsea7, and Allseas. This phase is critical for enhancing connectivity and efficiency in hydrocarbon transport across the offshore field.
Package 3, covering modification works on existing infrastructure, is anticipated to be issued in the coming weeks. These modifications will address aging facilities and integrate modern technologies to improve efficiency and safety in production processes. The scope of work is expected to include platform upgrades, process system enhancements, and structural reinforcements.
Package 4, focused on the decommissioning and abandonment of existing facilities, is scheduled for tender issuance in 2026. Given the maturity of the Maydan Mahzam field, this phase will be crucial for the responsible retirement of outdated infrastructure while ensuring minimal environmental impact. The overall expansion of the Maydan Mahzam Oilfield aligns with QatarEnergy’s strategy to maximize hydrocarbon recovery from mature fields while modernizing offshore production capabilities.
