The Diriyah Arena – a USD 1.55 billion flagship project at the heart of the Diriyah Gate development has officially moved into the construction phase following the award of a major contract. The Branch of China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd has secured the USD 1.53 billion (SAR 5.75 billion) contract for the construction of the Diriyah Arena Block, solidifying the project’s trajectory within Saudi Arabia’s broader giga-project portfolio.
Spanning an expansive 76,000 square meters, the Arena is being built as a 20,000-seat multi-purpose indoor venue designed to host a wide range of events, including concerts, sporting tournaments, esports competitions, and exhibitions. With a gross floor area of approximately 74,000 square meters, the facility will integrate advanced acoustic technologies and adaptable configurations that allow for seamless transitions between event formats. The Arena is not only a standalone entertainment destination but also a keystone element within a larger mixed-use district that fuses traditional Saudi architecture with contemporary design.
Beyond the Arena itself, the development includes three mixed-use office buildings totaling 114,000 square meters, alongside more than 4,000 parking spaces and expansive public realms including a landscaped park and open-air performance plaza. These elements are central to Diriyah’s ambition to become a cultural and lifestyle hub within Riyadh, aligning with the objectives of Vision 2030 to foster tourism, heritage, and economic diversification.
The contract award to China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd highlights the increasing role of international contractors in Saudi Arabia’s megaprojects. The company, a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company, is actively involved in several infrastructure projects in the Kingdom, contributing expertise in large-scale urban and transport developments.
Diriyah Company, the developer behind the project, is leading multiple high-value initiatives within the Diriyah Gate masterplan, including hospitality, residential, and infrastructure components. The Arena Block represents one of the most significant vertical construction packages to date within the scheme.
The contract award also comes at a time when Saudi Arabia is witnessing a surge in entertainment infrastructure investment. The Kingdom has advanced numerous sports, leisure, and tourism-related projects aimed at positioning itself as a regional entertainment destination. With the Diriyah Arena poised to serve as a premier venue for international events, its development underpins broader national efforts to diversify the economy and enhance the urban experience for both residents and global visitors.
Construction activities are now underway, with excavation, structural works, and foundational systems expected to dominate the early execution phases. As timelines progress, the project will continue to serve as a benchmark for integrated cultural and commercial construction in the region.
