Turkish engineering and consulting firm Proyapi has been awarded a design contract to spearhead the detailed design phase of Kuwait’s ambitious railway network development. This initial phase of the railway initiative spans 265 kilometers and focuses on strengthening Kuwait’s integration within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) railway network. The design phase, lasting 12 months, will culminate in the preparation of tender documents for the construction stage, paving the way for completion by 2030.
Phase 1 of the network features two critical segments. The first, a 111-kilometer single-track line, connects Kuwait’s southern border with Saudi Arabia at Nuwaiseeb Point to Shaddadiyah, accommodating both passenger and freight trains. Four strategically located stations will support maintenance, storage, and logistics. A second 154-kilometer segment will link to Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port, enhancing connectivity and enabling efficient transport of passengers and goods, including those to and from Boubyan Island. Passenger trains will operate at speeds of 200 kilometers per hour, while freight trains will run at 120 kilometers per hour using diesel locomotives.
Kuwait’s railway network will also play a transformative role in cross-border travel. High-speed passenger services between Kuwait City and Riyadh will reduce travel time to two hours, significantly enhancing convenience and fostering economic and cultural ties between the two nations. The network is expected to accommodate 3,300 daily passengers with six round trips, operating at speeds of up to 225 kilometers per hour on the Kuwaiti section. Upon its anticipated completion in 2028, this state-of-the-art transportation system will mark a pivotal step in boosting regional connectivity and trade.
