The Trans-Maghreb Railway initiative, which aims to link Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia with a 3200 km unified railway network, is progressing steadily despite political challenges. Recent updates indicate that feasibility and technical studies have advanced, with further assessments underway to ensure the optimal use of funds. However, political disagreements between Morocco and Algeria have delayed the official validation of the scheme, stalling certain phases. Bilateral agreements are being explored to mitigate these issues to keep the initiative moving forward.
The ambitious effort seeks to reconstruct key railway lines, including the Fes-Oujda line in Morocco and the Oujda-Akid Abbas border between Morocco and Algeria. In Algeria, the plan will establish a new railway link from Annaba to Jendouba, Tunisia, where the Jendouba-Jedaida section will be upgraded. Electrification of the network using a 2×25 kV system and the implementation of advanced ERTMS level 2 signaling systems will enhance both operational efficiency and safety, reducing travel times across the network from 48 to under 25 hours.
Once completed, the Trans-Maghreb Railway is expected to revolutionize economic and social interactions in the region, boosting trade and cooperation between the three nations. The improved connectivity across North Africa is anticipated to strengthen diplomatic relations and stimulate GDP growth, serving as a model for successful regional integration in Africa. Despite current political hurdles, the venture remains a promising example of cross-border collaboration.
