Oman and Etihad Rail Company (OERC) unveiled the new brand identity for the railway network connecting Sohar to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), now named ‘Hafeet Rail’.
Three pivotal agreements mark the commencement of the railway network project linking Oman and the UAE. The first agreement, a partnership between shareholders including Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala, signifies the official kick-off of the project.
The second agreement involves the awarding of civil contracts for a collaborative network led by ‘Trojan Construction Group’ (NPC) and ‘Galfar Engineering and Contracting’. Meanwhile, the third agreement pertains to the awarding of systems and integration contracts to an alliance between ‘Siemens’ and ‘Hassan Allam Construction’ for the implementation of advanced techniques and technology in train operations.
Tetraturk International Engineering and Consultancy Company has secured the infrastructure design contract, assuming responsibility for designing road projects, track works, road and railway line drainage systems, hydrology and flow assessment reports, and bridge and culvert scour analysis, as well as preparing tender documents.
The 303-kilometer railway will connect Suhar to Abu Dhabi, with passenger trains targeting a travel time of 1 hour and 40 minutes. The journey between Sohar and Al Ain will be reduced to 47 minutes, with trains operating at a maximum speed of 200 kilometers per hour, while freight trains will run at speeds up to 120 kilometers per hour.
OERC and Mubadala Investment Company (Mubadala) have inked a significant agreement for the project, with a total investment value of USD 3 billion. This cooperative agreement includes the establishment of working groups and a joint committee to leverage shared capabilities and knowledge, as well as to develop an economic and financial feasibility study.
Once operational, the railway will have the capacity to transport 12,000 passengers per day and 250,000 containers, facilitating enhanced connectivity and logistics efficiency between Oman and the UAE.
