Tunisia is making significant strides toward renewable energy with the development of multiple large-scale solar power facilities as part of its 1,700MW renewable energy plan. The Tunisian Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy signed power offtake agreements with leading developers, ensuring the country’s transition to clean energy. Among the key initiatives is the 198MWac solar power plant in El Khobna, Sidi Bouzid, which will be developed by Qair Energy. This facility is expected to be operational by 2027 and will contribute substantially to Tunisia’s sustainable energy goals.
In Menzel Habib, Gabes, a 139MW (100MWac) solar power plant is being developed by Voltalia under a similar power offtake contract. The facility will generate enough electricity to meet the annual consumption of over 620,000 inhabitants while preventing the emission of 360,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. This initiative aligns with Tunisia’s long-term vision for reducing its carbon footprint, with electricity sales secured under a 25-year contract.
Additionally, Mezzouna, Sidi Bouzid, will host another 100MWac solar power plant, developed by Scatec Solar ASA in partnership with a unit of Toyota Tsusho. This addition to the renewable energy plan is expected to enhance Tunisia’s energy independence and provide a stable supply of clean electricity to the grid. With a strong commitment to diversifying its energy mix, Tunisia is attracting major international developers to invest in its solar infrastructure.
Finally, the city of El Ksar in Gafsa will see the construction of another 100MWac solar power plant, developed by Qair Energy. Like the other installations, it is set to be operational by 2027, further solidifying Tunisia’s ambition to expand its renewable energy capacity. Collectively, these solar power plants will play a crucial role in achieving the country’s sustainability objectives, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and promoting a greener future for Tunisia.
