Hazmat 2020 – a sneak preview

Our annual Hazmat conference, now in its 13th year, is returning to the Crowne Plaza, Stratford-upon-Avon on 13-14 May. Once again, the conference will bring together expert speakers and trainers to share best practice and new developments within the hazmat community.

This year’s programme will include speakers from the National CBRN Centre, National Ambulance Resilience Unit (NARU), AstraZeneca, London Fire Brigade (LFB), the Fire Service College (FSC) and Ohio Task Force 1. Our crisis and emergency response experts will also be delivering sessions this year.

NCEC’s hazardous materials expert, Ed Sullivan, and Josh Allaway (Tutor Chemist at the FSC) will be delivering an interactive workshop based on a real-life incident, which will combine simulation software with wet chemistry. This workshop aims to provide tactical advice to incident commanders and, more widely, to partner organisations. As a fun and interactive worship, it will give delegates the opportunity to practise wet chemistry in order to establish the UN classification of the materials present.

Brian Galsworthy (Fire Safety Advisor and Incident Manager Specialist at AstraZeneca) will be exploring how to respond to an incident at a chemical site subject to the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations (COMAH). Peter Gustafson (Group Commander, LFB) is delivering a workshop on corrosive substance attacks and Michelle Ping at NARU will be presenting on the capabilities of the NHS to deal with casualties from a chemical incident. Our crisis management team will be bringing the conference to a close with a practical session on how to effectively communicate during a crisis incident.

Exhibitors already confirmed to be joining us at Hazmat 2020 to demonstrate new trends and technologies in the hazmat field includes Anton Paar (UK) Ltd, Honeywell Analytics, ShawCity and Southern Scientific.

New for 2020 – poster display

As the Hazmat conference continues to grow, we have introduced a poster display and competition. This will be a great opportunity to showcase case studies, lessons learnt, best practice, application of new technologies and any other area of hazmat. What’s more, the winner of the best poster will be awarded £100 worth of Amazon vouchers and one free delegate place for Hazmat 2021.*

Pre-conference workshop

During the afternoon of 12 May (the day before Hazmat 2020), we will once again be running the exceptionally popular half-day workshop “Understanding the dynamics of emotional response“.

‘The pre-course workshop was fantastic and was my favourite part of the 3 days.’ – Louth Fire & Rescue Service The workshop is based on our emotional response and resilience training course and will help you to recognise and identify stress overload, and apply stress management techniques during crisis situations. It will also help you manage the impact of stress on your mental health. The workshop was fully booked last year, and places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
