- Innovative, flexible, and compact water mist system from WAGNER Rail for passenger areas in rolling stock
- Simple and space-saving installation
- Suitable for stocking, easy to replace, and retrofittable
Langenhagen. WAGNER Rail is expanding WAGNER Group’s FirExting® portfolio with “Water Mist Compact,” a compact water mist-based fire suppression system. The new solution is characterized by high efficiency, a small space requirement, ad ease of integration and maintenance. It is particularly suitable for passenger areas in rolling stock – for passenger compartments such as standard or sleeper cars, as well as, for example, on-board kitchens or restrooms.
Water mist systems work by releasing micro-fine water droplets that evaporate very quickly as mist, thereby drawing heat energy away from the fire. This enables fast, effective, and gentle fire suppression with low water consumption. With its innovative “Water Mist Compact” development, WAGNER Rail is now launching a space-saving, flexible, and particularly easy-to-integrate solution that is lightweight and highly efficient.
“Thanks to their low water consumption, water mist systems cause very little secondary damage, making them ideal for areas where operations need to resume quickly after a fire. The fine droplets leave no residue. And after a fire, the system is quickly back up and running,” explains Dr. Markus Müller, Managing Director of WAGNER Rail GmbH, describing the technology. “Our latest development goes one step further: it is our smallest and lightest water mist system. It can be installed in a more compact space while delivering the same performance. Both planning and integration into the vehicle are simpler than with conventional systems.”

This is made possible by a special, innovative design of the compact water mist system. For the first time, the water needed for fire suppression and the nitrogen gas required for atomization are housed together in a single container. This allows for the elimination of additional components and extensive piping to a large extent. This not only saves installation space and weight but also reduces the number of interfaces with the vehicle. Planning and execution of the installation process are significantly simplified. After a flooding, the system can be quickly replaced; the containers can be kept in stock as compact replacement parts.
Extensive testing has confirmed the system’s performance. It complies with ARGE Part 2 and UNI 11565:2021, making it suitable for use internationally. Since the containers can be heated or insulated, this solution is also suitable for demanding applications and operates reliably even at very low temperatures.
“Ultimately, what matters most to operators is a comprehensive package that combines safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness,” explains Markus Müller. “Our technology stands out for its high effectiveness, low impact on the interior, and excellent retrofitability. This makes it ideal for both existing fleets and new vehicle designs.”
WAGNER Rail is already implementing its first projects using the new compact water mist system, which will be showcased at InnoTrans in Berlin from September 22 to 25.
