Telgian fire protection industry expert Russell Leavitt, CFPS, SET will present a Fire Smarts “Energy Storage Systems (ESS) Fire Hazard Considerations” webinar on September 14, 2023, from 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm Eastern. The webinar will provide an updated understanding of the types of energy storage systems, related construction methods, and the serious associated fire hazards. Current code requirements for ESS fire protection will be reviewed, along with current best practices to help ensure a safe environment for facilities and their occupants.
Presenter Russell Leavitt, CFPS, SET is the Executive Chairman of Telgian Holdings, Inc. and the Chair of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). With over 42 years of experience, he holds a Level IV certification from NICET in Fire Sprinkler Layout as well as a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) designation. In addition, he is the former Chair of the NFPA 13 Sprinkler System Discharge Criteria Technical Committee and continues to serve on the committee along with the NFPA 13 Installation Committee and the NFPA 3, NFPA 4 909, and 914 Technical Committees.

Energy Storage Systems (ESS) meet the need for having reliable power supplies at a future time, but present serious challenges and hazards to the facility owner, fire protection engineer/consultant, and professional firefighter.
“At the conclusion of the webinar, participants will be able to identify and describe the various energy storage systems in use today, explain the fire hazards associated with battery storage systems and describe the unique fire hazards when using lithium-ion batteries, as well as identify and apply current code requirements for ESS fire protection,” says Leavitt.
Each participant registered, attending the full live training webinar or viewing the post-live recorded on-demand webinar, will receive a Certificate of Completion. Certificates can be used as supporting documentation for continuing education (CE) hours for the International Code Council (ICC approved for 0.1 CEU’s), NICET Continuing Professional Development, the Pennsylvania UCC and the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
